The rains are finally here and in the spirit of environmental conservation, we teamed up with the Kajiado County Government for an urban forest planting initiative in Ngong, right near our school. With Kenya’s forests under increasing pressure from deforestation and urban expansion, this was more than just an outdoor activity; it was a hands-on lesson in sustainability and climate action.
Our young learners, armed with watering cans and shovels, got their hands (and uniforms) delightfully muddy as they dug, shoveled, and planted. After the holes were prepared, they carefully mixed in manure before planting the seedlings, treating them with the same tenderness they show their favorite toys.
Passersby couldn’t help but stop and watch in amusement, after all, how often do you see a brigade of “cool kids” excited to shovel dirt? Some were planting trees for the first time ever, but you’d think they had been forestry experts in a past life!
Our teachers, directors, and even a few parents also rolled up their sleeves to join the cause, proving that tree planting isn’t just for the young but for the young at heart.
With each seedling we planted, we weren’t just adding greenery to Ngong; we were contributing to a greener, healthier future for generations to come. And while the trees will take years to grow, we left with something the immediate joy of knowing we played our part in fighting climate change, one tree at a time.
Over the past two years, Kenya has experienced extreme weather patterns from devastating droughts to unexpected heavy rains, a clear sign that global warming is knocking at our doorstep. Scientists have warned that deforestation has significantly contributed to these climate changes, making afforestation and reforestation more crucial than ever.
